The majority of our founding members had already been active as the “Middle East Section” of the Weltweite Initiative für Soziales Engagement e.V., and by founding a seperate association, they wanted to expand the volunteer programme in the Middle East (focussing on the Palestine). Together with other interested and committed people, we came together to found the non-profit association Augenhöhe e.V.
With this association, we wish to organise an intercultural exchange of volunteers in both directions (sending and receiving), develop educational work and closely cooperate with our partner projects as equals.
You can view our association statutes here.
Statement of Augenhöhe concerning the polarising debate of ‘normalisation’:
We do not accept the status quo of the Isreali occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.
We only want to cooperate with organisations and institutions that acknowledge the assymetric nature of the situation and clearly oppose it.
In that way, co-resistance, the joint resistance becomes possible.
Encounter per se is important to us, but work geared towards cooperation without a clear statement against the injustice means to implicitly accept the injustice.
An encounter on eye level (AUGENHÖHE) can only really happen after the end of the occupation.
